STEM Striders Take on the Glasgow Kiltwalk in Support of Social Bite

“We had a ball! Really enjoyed it.” That was the verdict from the STEM Striders, after they laced up their boots and joined thousands of passionate participants on this year’s Glasgow Kiltwalk.

We spoke with Dr Cait Murray-Green, of Strategic Scientific Consulting, and Dr Orla Kelly about their experience raising funds and awareness for Social Bite during the Glasgow Kiltwalk. With enthusiasm, purpose, and a splash of tartan, they began their route in Clydebank, took a wet pitstop in Bowling, shifted into a totally different climate just four miles later in Dumbarton, and concluded at the finishing point in Balloch.

What’s the inspiration behind the name?

“We called ourselves STEM Striders as at the beginning of the year I pulled together a list of women from the Central Belt area that are all involved in STEM companies and whom I enjoy interacting with at events but rarely get a chance to talk to away from a work environment. It was a way of getting out and being social, that plays into wellness and fitness, and also for women, challenges us to put our own health and needs first, ahead of family, work commitments or caring commitments…hence STEM Striders.”

Why did you choose to support Social Bite?

“We picked Social Bite because of the good work that you do, your presence in both Glasgow and Edinburgh, but also because as a community and nation so many of us are scarily close to a crisis (financial or mental health) which could cause a major disruption to our lives and lead to homelessness, especially with the cost of housing and cost of living increases.”

We’re incredibly grateful to the STEM Striders for choosing to walk in support of Social Bite. Their efforts have raised an impressive £1,339 – surpassing their original goal and making a real difference in the lives of the people we support. The money raised will go towards our free food services through Social Bite coffee shops in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, providing hot meals and vital support to people experiencing food poverty.

From walks to runs to cycles, every distance counts
