Meet the people behind the mission
Social Bite was founded by Josh Littlejohn MBE and Alice Thompson in 2012. We have a dedicated management team and we aim to employ 1 in 4 people with a background of homelessness or extreme barriers to employment.
You can see some of our team tell their stories in their own words in this video:
Our Founder
Josh Littlejohn MBE
Josh is an award-winning social entrepreneur and the founder of Social Bite, The British Business Awards, and co-founder of Brewgooder. He has led efforts to raise over £25 million for homelessness causes and has been recognised with numerous honours, including an MBE, a Pride of Britain Award, a Robert Burns Humanitarian Award, and seven honorary doctorates. His book Paying It Forward reached number seven in the Sunday Times Best Sellers list. The opening of the original Social Bite Village in 2018 is just one of many moments Josh is proud of.
Our Trustees
Sir Andrew Cubie
Sir Andrew is the Chair of the collegiate Board of the Social Bite Fund, an organisation he describes as incredible, life-changing, and made up of fantastic people. His commitment to addressing homelessness dates back to the late 1960s, when he worked with the Shelter Housing Aid Centre in Edinburgh. Even then, he was dismayed by how society responded to homelessness and remains saddened that too little has changed in the decades since.
When invited to chair the Social Bite Board four years ago, Sir Andrew accepted without hesitation. He recognised that Josh had created a society-changing initiative that required strong governance to support its continued growth – something he hopes he and his colleagues have now brought.
Katie Crook
Katie has over 20 years of experience in senior HR leadership, and currently leads HR and Shared Services at the Scottish Futures Trust, a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB). Her professional journey began with setting up and running coffee shops within B&Q warehouses across the UK, which led to her early involvement with Social Bite Limited, when she became its Chair in 2017. She joined the Social Bite Fund Board as a Trustee in 2023.
Katie is continually amazed and delighted by the work that the team at Social Bite delivers, sometimes in the most outrageous weather – Katie cannot forget one memorable Break the Cycle event in Linlithgow which took place in torrential rain. However, it was made more cheerful by an encounter with Mr Motivator!
Fiona Martin
Fiona brings 35 years’ experience as a chartered accountant, including leading the Scottish audit practice of an international accountancy firm. She believes strong governance is about creating the right foundations for bold, impactful work like Social Bite’s to thrive.
As well as joining as trustee to the Social Bite Fund Board, Fiona is the Chair of our Audit & Risk Committee, where for the past year she has provided clear oversight, constructive challenges, and trusted guidance to the Board.
Outside of work, Fiona has kayaked across Lake Titicaca, ridden horses in the Atacama Desert, and explored the temples of Machu Picchu and Angkor Wat – proof that adventurous spirit and good governance can go hand-in-hand. Fiona is an asset to the Board as we look to continue to grow our impact and strengthen the foundations that help make it happen.
Lyn MacDonald
Lyn brings over 18 years’ experience supporting commercial growth, brand development and digital transformation across private-equity backed and entrepreneurial organisations.
Experienced in B2C, B2B and B2B2C, Lyn develops a collaborative approach to aligning marketing, sales, and operations to strengthen performance and long-term sustainability. With a proven-track record in building successful teams and building brands through storytelling, Lyn also brings board-level experience, multi-sector insight, and a commitment to responsible, customer-focussed growth.
Derrick McCourt
Derrick joins the Board with extensive experience in technology leadership and governance, having spent over two decades in senior roles at Microsoft and now working across advisory and board positions. He is passionate about using innovation and partnership to tackle complex social challenges and is looking forward to supporting our mission to end homelessness through strong governance and sustainable growth.
Malcom Rust
Malcolm joined the Board in November 2023. He is a charity lawyer and leads the charity team at Shepherd and Wedderburn, his areas of interest being governance and regulation. He is an accredited charity law specialist through the Law Society of Scotland and writes and lectures widely on the charity sector and issues which affect it.
Malcolm has given advice through his firm to Social Bite and is retained to assist particularly on charity law matters. He sits on the charity’s Audit & Risk Committee. Malcolm’s most memorable moment dealing with Social Bite was being complimented on his tartan trews by Sir Bob Geldof in the loading bay of the EICC!
Graeme Watt
Graeme joined the board in 2023 after a long and dynamic executive career in the IT industry. His connection to Social Bite began in 2015, after one of his sons slept out overnight in Edinburgh, and Graeme heard Josh speaking about the charity on television the following morning. This had a lasting impact on Graeme in two ways. First, he began fundraising for Social Bite and introduced the charity to Softcat, where he was working at the time. He then felt compelled to do even more to directly, which lead to him joining him to join the Board.
Throughout his time with the charity, he has been continually inspired by the dedication and compassion of the team. Of all the work he has seen, he highlights the current initiatives to build new Social Bite Villages in Dundee and South Lanarkshire as particular sources of pride. He expresses heartfelt thanks to the team for their relentless commitment to supporting people affected by homelessness and for living the values of compassion, respect, integrity, and innovation every single day.
Steve Young
As Senior VP and Managing Director for Dell Technologies in the UK, Steve brings over 20 years of service and experience to his role of supporting UK customers on their digital journey.
He was drawn to Social Bite by our Founder, Josh Littlejohn, and the evolution of the pillars of our work Jobs, Homes, Food – particularly the way entrepreneurship sits at the heart of how we create lasting change. That entrepreneurial spirit strongly resonates with how he leads within Dell, and he’s excited to bring that mindset, alongside his commercial experience, to help strengthen and support Social Bite’s next phase of growth.
In addition to his work with Social Bite, Steve also leads engagement with Dell UK’s main charity partners, too. Most recently, he trekked to Everest Base Camp with a team from Dell as a fundraiser. The challenge that reflects both his ambition and his commitment to impact beyond his day job.
