Laura set to complete her first marathon in support of Social Bite

OG Social Bite supporter and all-round superstar Laura is taking on her first ever marathon is support of Social Bite this weekend at the Edinburgh Marathon Festival. Laura has been a supporter of ours for many years now, raising thousands of pounds in the process that have helped to provide homes, jobs, food and support top people experiencing homelessness. We wanted to check in with Laura ahead of the big day to see how she was feeling and ask her why she chooses to support Social Bite.

Q. Why did you choose to support Social Bite?

Laura: “Why wouldn’t I?😉 My reason for picking Social Bite was a result of a few things, I had personal experience of homelessness in my private life when a dear family member found themselves in a situation (not by choice but by a change in circumstances) and by proactive action taken by partnership agencies such as emergency accommodation and education, they were able to be rehoused with 4 -8 weeks and starting college to allow them to move on. I then volunteered at a local soup kitchen during Uni and this gave me an true insight. Finally I had the pleasure to meet a man who was homeless and was reading to keep himself and others drug free whilst on the streets. I thought “what can I do?”, so I had a look and saw that there was going to be a Social Bite Big Sleep Out in Glasgow in 2018. Feeling motivated, and after speaking to fantastic Social bite volunteers – I completed my Big Sleep Out and I was hooked. I wanted to do know more about Social Bite and became invested immediately as I could see all the hard work being done by real folks fighting for empowerment, social justice, inclusion – a few of my core values of life. I knew then I had to be part of it💚. Since then I have taken part in every campaign – from the Break the Cycle, to Festival of Kindness – I shout from the roof tops the hard work that Social Bite do. I make no apologies for this, vulnerable people need a voice and Social Bite is doing it. So my next challenge of running my first Marathon at Edinburgh Marathon Festival was a no brainer to me, I couldn’t be more excited to do so in the home of the first Social Bite Coffee Shop and Village. ‘Mon Team Social Bite 😉🤘🏻”

Q. Does running in support of Social Bite help give you that extra bit of motivation?

Laura: “Yes as Social Bite work tirelessly to ensure vulnerable people, often with complex needs, are treated with the highest form of dignity and respect. That they are valued and given a chance to rebuild their physical health, mental health, family and social connections. They are also able to make a great contribution in society through education and opportunities to work in the coffee shops up in Scotland and down to London. So what better run boost eh? So on 28th May 2023, I will be even more proud to run those 26 miles round Edinburgh for Team Social Bite, taking essential steps towards a clear mission of ending homelessness for good 💪.”

Laura –   Thank you so SO much for everything you do to support us. Supporters like you make the work we do possible and we are so very lucky to have you in our corner. We can’t wait to cheer you on this Sunday, and we know that you’ve 100% got this one in the bag!
