100 miles – one epic challenge
Once again, Social Bite’s amazing fundraisers have gone above and beyond for our 100 Mile Challenge. This autumn, thousands of miles were covered, hundreds of supporters took part, and it made for one epic 100 Mile Challenge!
Starting from 1st September until World Homeless Day on the 10th October, participants walked, ran and cycled hundreds of miles. Together, they raised awareness and funds for Social Bite’s work ending homelessness.
We caught up with a few of Challengers to hear how they chose to complete the challenge and what motivated them.
Alec’s personal experience
“Having experienced homelessness and gone through the system myself, I know how easily people can find themselves in that situation. It can happen to people from all walks of life, often because of circumstances they never expected to face.
“That’s why I wanted to support Social Bite. I understand how important it is to have organisations out there offering people practical help, support and, most importantly, hope, that things can get better.
“Taking on the challenge felt like a positive way for me to give something back while continuing to move forward with my own life.
“The biggest highlight for me was completing a good part of the challenge on the West Highland Way. Being out there walking through some of the most beautiful parts of Scotland while also knowing that every mile was contributing towards the challenge made it feel even more worthwhile.”
Jenny’s community spirit
“I chose to take part in this fundraiser because I think Social Bite do great work and this was a fun, healthy and active way to raise awareness and funds.
“I think a real highlight for me was the sense of community in the WhatsApp group. It was so nice hearing where other people were walking and seeing their photos. I also think I got pretty lucky with the weather considering the time of year! And even when it rains, Scotland is still beautiful and it’s good to get some fresh air.”
Jackie takes a chance on taking part
“I signed up for the challenge impulsively as I think Social Bite is a really great charity.
“When I see anyone sleeping rough my heart breaks for them. Everyone needs and should have a safe place to live so they can thrive.
“I was worried about asking family and friends for donations as I don’t like putting people in an awkward situation if they can’t afford to donate. So I decided to use Facebook and was delighted when I managed to raise £200 on the first day!”
Anne’s confidence boost
“As an education professional and now a published writer I have always wanted to give voice and a safe space to people who are in need.
“The best part of the challenge for me was a renewed confidence in my fitness (I’m age 77) and the enormous support from others on the group chat. It was a lovely community.”
Izzy’s support for an important cause
“I think that supporting Social Bite has really made sure I met the challenge. I was lucky enough to have very generous friends and family who also see how important it is to support this charity in their work with people who are homeless.
“I’ve completed most of my miles by doing between one and five miles a day - it soon added up. I really enjoyed it. I reckoned as a not terribly fit 75 year I did ‘no bad’!”
Caroline’s reaction to rough sleeping
“I am deeply saddened by the number of folk who have to sleep rough every night in the twenty-first century but know that homelessness can happen to anyone through no fault of their own. Social Bite is trying to make a difference.”
Lindsay’s mix of sports
“I completed the 100 Mile Challenge through a combination of walks, running, bike riding and swimming. (I even logged some dancing!) Doing anything to support our community is so important.”
Thanks from Social Bite Challenge Events Lead, Ross
“This is the fourth year of the 100 Mile Challenge and once again I’m blown away by our amazing Social Bite supporters taking on the 100 Mile Challenge.
“It’s not an easy challenge to get out there each day and clock up another walk in cold or rainy weather but we’re consistently so inspired by seeing everyone of all ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels coming together across the UK to take on the 100 Mile Challenge.
“A huge thank you to everyone who took part this year.”
